Gaia was created at the International Sculpture Symposium, Barossa Valley 2008 by Viktor Kalinowski

In the beginning...

3rd September  2008 we met at Menglers Hill to decide who will work with which stone

Over the six weeks the sculptors from seven countries worked daily side by side in all weather. The aim being to create a stone sculpture that would become  part of the permanent collection at Menglers Hill. We worked individually on our pieces but also as a team, assisting each other in many ways. Raising these rocks from their horizontal position to stand vertically or be mounted took many pairs of hands ... this is after all 4,000 kilograms of stone.

Power tools in action, Viktor used a lot of diamond cutting with the angle grinder

Lode working on assembly of his sculpture

Hiroshi  cut his sculpture totally by hand with chisels and his skills - no power tools

One of the highlights of the symposium was when we were splitting stone

Patrice assisting Viktor with the process of splitting

Taking it slow is the  key to achieve good results, this means a straight clean cut in the desired place

Very happy with the results, stone split exactly the way Viktor  wanted

Steve was a great  help and provided specialist equipment and expertise, precision with a bulldozer. He was also a great sponsor. Thanks Steve
